 Zambia – History

Zambia, known for the mighty Victoria Falls (“Mosi-oa-Tunya” – The Smoke That Thunders), has a history shaped by indigenous kingdoms, British colonial rule, and a strong independence movement. Once part of Northern Rhodesia, it gained freedom in 1964 under Kenneth Kaunda. Today, Zambia is known for its peaceful politics, friendly people, and stunning wildlife safaris.

  • Early Kingdoms: Home to Bantu-speaking peoples and kingdoms like the Lozi and Bemba.
  • Colonial Era: Incorporated into British South Africa Company territory in the late 19th century, later becoming Northern Rhodesia.
  • Independence: Gained independence in 1964, with Kenneth Kaunda as first president.
  • Modern Zambia: Known for stability and natural wonders such as Victoria Falls and the Zambezi River.
