Botswana – History
Botswana, famous for the Okavango Delta and vast wildlife reserves, has a unique story of transformation. Once a poor British protectorate called Bechuanaland, it gained independence peacefully in 1966. Since then, Botswana has become one of Africa’s most stable democracies and one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, thanks to diamond mining and strong governance.
Pre-Colonial
- Inhabited by the San (Bushmen) and later Tswana-speaking peoples, who formed chiefdoms.
Colonial Period
- Became the Bechuanaland Protectorate under Britain in 1885 to resist Boer and German expansion.
Independence
- Gained independence in 1966 under Sir Seretse Khama, Botswana’s first president.
