History of Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s history stretches back thousands of years, with some of the most impressive archaeological remains in Africa. The Great Zimbabwe Ruins, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, stand as evidence of a powerful civilization that thrived between the 11th and 15th centuries. This stone-built capital was the center of trade, linking southern Africa with the Indian Ocean coast and beyond.

In the late 19th century, British colonizers led by Cecil Rhodes took control, naming the territory Southern Rhodesia. It remained under colonial rule until the mid-20th century, with independence struggles gaining momentum in the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1980, after years of armed resistance and negotiation, the country gained independence and adopted the name Zimbabwe, inspired by the ancient stone city. Robert Mugabe became the nation’s first Prime Minister.

Today, Zimbabwe’s history reflects resilience — from the grandeur of its ancient kingdoms to its fight for self-rule — making it a land where heritage, culture, and identity remain deeply rooted.
